Custom Made Limited Edition makau by Po'okelaCustom Made Limited Edition
Kuleana Makau is crafted from the precious Ali’i Koa wood of the Big Island of Hawai’i, and fossilized Wooly Mammoth ivory. Ali’i Koa is a sacred wood, renowned for its warmth and richness, and is harvested with reverence and respect. The fossilized ivory is a reminder of our responsibility to care for the land, and the lashing that binds the two together signifies the mutual respect and relationship between us and the aina. This concept of kuleana is universal, and can be applied to other people and all living things. The pendant is finished with a protective water-resistant coat and polished to a magnificent shine.

INSPIRATION:

The Hawaiian word kuleana is a unique Hawaiian value and practice which is loosely translated to mean “responsibility.” The word kuleana refers to a reciprocal relationship between the person who is responsible, and the thing which they are responsible for. Relationships are a two way street.

For example, Hawaiians have a kuleana to our land: to care for it and to respect it, and in return, our land has the kuleana to feed, shelter, and clothe us, through this relationship we maintain balance within society and with our natural environment.

CARE OPTIONS

To ensure the best care of your fossilized mammoth ivory makau, it is important to keep it dry and avoid contact with any liquids. If it comes into contact with fresh or salt water, it can lead to deterioration and discoloration, as well as splintering and cracking of the surface. To maintain its condition, wipe it down with a dry and clean cloth.

To care for your makau carved from fossilized walrus ivory, simply wipe it down with a dry cloth to remove any grease and body oils, which will bring out its natural shine. Fossilized walrus ivory is an extremely durable material and is naturally water-resistant, due to the animal's time spent in the water. No animals were harmed in the processing of this material, as the tusk is excavated from beneath the ground.

To ensure your makau carved from wood remains in good condition, Po'okela applys a multi-layer water-resistant coating to all makau's carved from wood. Additionally, you should occasionally wipe it down with a cloth to remove any grease or residue build-up. Po'okela has been testing his secret cure method for over 5 years and his test pendant has held up under the normal wear and tear of exposing the wood to soap in the shower and salt water in the ocean with no discoloration or deterioration. All in all, you can wear the pendant without worry of discoloration or the pendant getting damaged from normal wear and tear.

To ensure your makau carved from white bone lasts for many years, no special care is required. Bone is one of the most durable materials. However, due to its porous nature, the color may gradually change to a yellowish hue over time as a result of your body oils coming into contact with it. This is a natural process that can even give the piece more character and mana. If you wish to naturally restore its original white color, you can submerge it in salt water and expose it to the sun.
